Manchester City 3-0 The Red Devils: Lauren Hemp finds the net in Manchester City dominant win.
Much like bad weather tore through the northwest the night before, the home side overwhelmed the visitors away at the their home ground. It was a statement three-nil win for their manager's side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their title credentials as they strengthened their standing at the top of the table.
Successive Defeats for United
This result represented consecutive league defeats for Skinner's side for the first time since last May, leaving them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their championship aspirations severely dented.
The Red Devils' ability to juggle league and continental football with a small roster has been a widely debated subject since they earned a place in the European competition. Considering the schedule, it always felt like this was the week that would seriously challenge this capability. Unfortunately for the away side, they appeared fatigued throughout, the memorable win against the French side clearly having taken a toll.
Lineup Adjustments
The United manager had attempted to rotate the squad with a a few alterations. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all brought freshness, although the omission of the high-performing Malard to the bench was questioned.
City, in comparison, have no similar fitness issues. The City coach made one change from last week’s win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from a physical setback.
Overpowering Start
The pressure started to accumulate for the United boss and his team from the first whistle. This was a demonstration of the power from City whose potent offense played with and pulled the visitors apart with a sublime initial 45 minutes performance that saw them net a trio in just over twenty minutes.
This put the hosts completely dominant and had Manchester United all at sea. Before this encounter, the away side had allowed just few in this domestic competition but they collapsed in the presence of City’s offensive ingenuity.
Early Chances
The warning signs came quickly when Vivianne Miedema used her power to push Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot off target. Lauren Hemp was at the center of everything early on, exploiting the room left by Riviere down the visitors' right flank. Her deliveries were causing problems and led to an chance for Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg scrambled off the line.
United had a number of sorties forwards, their straightforward approach giving them alternatives in the wide areas but they could not trouble Ayaka Yamashita. City, on the other hand, commanded the ball, teasing their opposition and trying to pull them out of their defensive shape.
Scoring Spree
They turned chances into goals with almost half an hour played when Aoba Fujino won the hosts a corner. A cross to the back post was directed across goal by Shaw for Knaak to head in. It was City’s 7th headed goal of the campaign.
They extended their lead with an additional two goals just before the break. When Jade Rose was allowed to advance through the center from defense, the pitch opened up for the hosts. The key Casparij picked the ball up on the wing before delivering a pinpoint low cross for Shaw to bundle home. A short time later, they had a additional score after a rapid shift in the ball saw Hemp given the space to drive a attempt home from outside the box.
Final Period
The clearest change came from the United manager at the break as Melvine Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the contest. Ex- City player Park came closest, rattling the post, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and were unable to produce a solitary shot on target.
The hosts, meanwhile, could have extended their lead when a superb Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the hosts. After failing to defeat any side who placed above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against the Gunners and United to place them in a favorable position after the opening fixtures.
