French authorities to begin stopping migrant vessels in English Channel after UK pressure
France has agreed to start stopping small boats in the Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the Prime Minister wrote to the French leader urging him to support the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Significantly, the official ruled out the use of nets to intercept boats, which had previously been reported as a possible method to snarl the engines of the boats.
The decision to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a short-lived change towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which ceased when the former government official left government.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Now French officials will again be allowed to intercept boats before they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking methods to adapt to avoid interception, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
